Types and Treatment Methods for Childhood Cancer

A former employee at the payroll department of Boston's Metropolitan District Commission, Baldwinsville, New York resident Mercia Grant is committed to charitable giving. One of the many charities Mercia Grant supports is St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, a non-profit focused on advancing treatment and preventive measures for childhood cancer.

Cancer is one of the significant causes of death among children and teenagers. According to global statistics, there are approximately 300,000 new cancer cases among children per year, with a substantial number of those infected losing their lives to the disease. In the US alone, there have been 11,000 new cases in 2020, with more than a thousand expected to lose their lives.

The most common types of cancer in children are hepatoblastoma (liver cancer), retinoblastoma, bone cancers, leukemia, spinal cord tumors, and Wilms tumor (kidney tumors). Medically, there are no known causes of childhood cancer. However, research has shown that about 10 percent of children have cancer due to genetic factors. Studies are still ongoing to determine other causes.

Treatment methods for cancer in children differ from those in adults. Pediatric oncology is the branch of medicine specifically focused on treating children with cancer. However, the treatment therapy used will largely depend on the type and stage of the disease. Standard therapies used to cure cancer in children include immunotherapy, chemotherapy, stem cell treatment, and radiation therapy.
